Nine films, one way home
Read together, Christopher Nolan's own films can be read as one story told nine times. A man loses someone, partly through his own doing. He keeps a record of the past so he doesn't have to see his part. Time won't bend for him, so the only move left is to go home, and home never comes back whole. That is our reading, not his claim. Below, ten threads run across the films in release order. Pick a thread to follow it, or a film to read it.

One reading, in six beats
- 1
A man loses someone, partly through his own act.
- 2
He keeps a record of the past, and the record is what lies to him.
- 3
The past is fixed. He can relive it, re-stage it or fight himself inside it, but not change it.
- 4
The cost comes out of time itself, in years out of step with the people he left.
- 5
He works the problem like a trick, and the trick has a body count.
- 6
The only move left is home. In The Odyssey the wife is alive, the memory comes back as guilt, and he goes back to pay the dead.
Where the clock lives
Across the career, the time in the films seems to move outward: from inside one man's head, to physics, to history, to myth. In the middle the hero loses his past entirely (Dunkirk's Tommy has no backstory and Tenet's hero has no name). In Oppenheimer and The Odyssey the wound comes back.
Following, Memento, The Prestige. Time is testimony, damage and stagecraft. You can't go back, only re-stage it.
Inception, Interstellar. Dream layers and relativity make the head's time literal, and the cost is paid by the people left behind.
Dunkirk, Tenet, Oppenheimer. An outcome everyone already knows, a loop closed in faith, a chain reaction that can't be stopped.
The Odyssey. History as cycles, memory returning as guilt, and a promise to the dead that becomes the ending.
How this was made
Four research agents read plot summaries, Nolan interviews, criticism and the science (including Kip Thorne on Interstellar), and wrote one sourced file per film with uncertainty marked. The Dark Knight trilogy and Insomnia are left out, as adaptation and remake. The threads, and the strength of each mark from one to three, are our judgement, not a measurement. The Odyssey was released after Simon's training, so everything about it comes from web research, and some details are contested between sources. Only quotes checked against a source appear here.
